Yume ni Aruku: a brief introduction

For this blog post, I will introduce Yume ni Aruku. This project was conceived a while ago, and its original concept was a group of girls who were sent to another world. While many things have changed since then, the original concept is still a significant part of the story.

The story follows Shion Masaki, who is nine years old at the start of the story, and her friends as they are sent to the world of Kariuba. Kariuba is a world which isolated itself from Earth and the rest of the galaxy after a massive war between the two worlds thousands of years ago. The war wiped out the magic-using civilisations on Earth, leaving only a massive underground archive in Japan as the only evidence of their existence. With Kariuba’s isolation, knowledge of the world among the people of Earth faded into myth and legend, and was eventually forgotten.

However, Kariuba has not forgotten Earth, and in the past few centuries, has attempted to re-establish contact with Earth. However, because even magic itself was largely forgotten by Earth’s population, no one paid attention to the Portal Monoliths, believing them to be strange, but natural rock formations. It was only when three Portal Monoliths were placed close to each other in Tokyo, very close to Mimori Elementary School, were they finally noticed.

The first time this happened was in August 1997. A number of people noticed these Portal Monoliths, and managed to activate them. What these people found out was that Kariuba was facing a crisis, brought on by rogue mages who intend to wipe out Kariuba’s mages, and the repeated attempts at contacting Earth were to send a message to any mages who are on Earth to help. The people who activated the Portal Monolith returned to Earth after solving the immediate crisis, but the threat remained, and they prepared to be called again for the next crisis.

That came in December 2009. Only this time, three separate groups of elementary school girls found the Portal Monoliths and activated them. Shion and her friends are one of these groups.

Characters:

  • Shion Masaki (真崎 詩音) – The main character of Yume ni Aruku. Shion is an outgoing and cheerful girl, but she also possesses a near-unwavering determination. Shion has two cousins, both of whom appear to be missing in Kariuba.
  • Yae Shizuka (静 八重) – Shion’s friend. Yae is a nice and caring girl, and is willing to listen to other people’s problems. Despite this, she does not forgive those who hurt others. Yae only lives with her mother, having never even seen her father.
  • Tomoe Arafuna (荒船 友恵) – Shion’s friend. Tomoe is a level-headed girl who tends to take things a little too seriously. However, she will stand up for her friends. Tomoe is an orphan, as her parents were murdered, and her legal guardian is Yae’s mother.
  • Nanako Masaki (真崎 奈々子) – Shion’s cousin. Nanako is a shy and timid girl. However, she will grow attached to whoever shows kindness to her. Nanako is initially in Kariuba, having been born there, but became unaccounted for after her parents were murdered.
  • Chitose Tanamura (棚村 千歳) – Shion’s friend. Chitose is a girl who seeks to do what she believes is best for her and her friends, and is very helpful towards others. Chitose is the youngest of four sisters.

I will post the first episode of Yume ni Aruku soon. I’ve already written much of what happens in the first chapter, and only need to rewrite bits I’ve revised (and bits which contradict later developments).

P.S. I wish a happy birthday to Nanyako- I mean, Nanako Usami of Locodol.

P.P.S. I’ll post a Yume ni Aruku trivia post next.

P.P.P.S. Oh, and before I forget, happy birthday to Kō Hayama of Three Leaves, Three Colors.
