Mage stats

In the Innocence Seekers and Yume ni Aruku series, mage stats refer to a set of three numerical measurements of a mage's capacity to use mana. The three numbers are pool capacity, bucket capacity, and strain capacity, and all three numbers have an impact on the performance of a mage in battle.

The three numbers are often given in units of energy. While they can be given in joules, more often than not a different unit is used (where one unit is equal to 4.184 GJ).

Pool capacity

A mage's pool capacity refers to the capacity of his/her internal mana reserves. It determins the most amount of mana a mage may consume before requiring the consumption of a mana potion. As such, it limits the amount of time a mage can use magic. Using more mana than one's pool capacity will lead to mana starvation.

Bucket capacity

A mage's bucket capacity refers to the largest amount of mana a mage may extract from his/her internal mana reserves at a time. Barring mana collection spells and Inherent Abilities, it limits the amount of power a mage may impart onto his/her spells.

A mage's bucket capacity only represents the upper limit of the mage's power. More often than not, mages tend to use weaker spells.

Strain capacity

A mage's strain capacity refers to the largest amount of mana a mage may manipulate. It limits the power of mana collection spells, but does not limit the power of Inherent Abilities. Attempting to manipulate more mana than one's strain capacity for an extended period will lead to mana poisoning and may result in a critical failure of mana containment (i.e. a mana explosion), which can deal massive damage to the mage and his/her surroundings.

Normally, as most mages do not use mana collection spells, strain capacity is often ignored. However, there are some individuals whose strain capacities are lower than their respective bucket capacitites. These individuals cannot use their most powerful spells, lest they fall victim to mana poisoning.
